Everything is possible – only you have a dream!
More and more of us dream of leaving everyday life behind us and sailing away towards sunset. Right now, a couple of hundred Swedish boats and crews are out sailing long distances on the world’s oceans. Some for an extra long vacation, others for a sabbatical year and a smaller number for a sailing without a definite end. Many people combine sailing with periods of working together a new travel fund and do a bit-by-bit sailing.

Many people combine sailing with periods to work together a new travel fund and do a bit-by-bit sailing.

The book addresses the more practical aspects of how to prepare yourself and your crew but also your boat for a trip to the Mediterranean, perhaps through the canals or a round trip to the Caribbean. Or maybe even around the world. Eleven practical chapters on how to prepare your long-distance sailing, covering everything from choosing the right boat for the sailing area to what emergency equipment you should have on board. All the time with a view that a long-distance sailing should be possible even with a smaller budget.

What is a long distance sailing?
A long voyage is not in how far away you sail, but in your experience! It can just as easily be a trip to Gotska Sandön as around the world. If you think it’s a long voyage, then it’s one! If you have previously only sailed in the archipelago, a trip to Skagen or Gotland is a long way to go. Lots of fantastic sailing waters are nearby; Åboland’s archipelago, the Baltics, Sörlandet in Norway or maybe Scotland.

However, this book will primarily deal with longer sailings that take a little longer than a normal five-week vacation. That is, a sailing where the boat must be prepared and equipped and a lot of planning must be done before the moorings are laid at the home pier.

The first steps
The important and usually the most difficult thing is to take the first step. Many dream, a lot plan, but in the end quite a few take the step and really get going. For most of us, a small exercise trip would be the solution – use the boat you already have or rent one somewhere where it is warm. Talk to other crews who have already sailed long distances to find out as it is something that may suit you. Create a goal, start saving money, raise money, gather some experience and get going.

Everything is possible only if you have a dream!
